Woman about to Commit Suicide, 1852

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of several men struggling over a letter inside a house. The man in the center wrestles his opponent to the ground, twisting his arm behind his back. His companion at right sits atop another adversary as he scans the long message, a worried expression on his face. A small child gestures excitedly at his side, clutching the edge of the paper. At far left, a beauty prepares to commit suicide, gently stroking her daughter under the chin as she says goodbye. She holds a knife in her other hand, and her legs are tied together with a white sash to ensure a dignified posture in death. The actors in the left panel are Onoe Kikugoro and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII, A fascinating scene with wonderfully expressive figures.
