Nakamura Shikan VI as Sunami Kazuemon and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as the Evil Spirit of the Cat Stone, 1861

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Tokaido Iroha Nikki," a tale about a cat witch living in a temple along the Tokaido Road who preyed on young women travelers. Here, the evil spirit of the cat takes the form of the beauty at left, grimacing angrily as she looks down while hiding behind her sleeve. At right, the samurai Sunami Kazuemon frowns at the spirit as he stares down at her, holding his cased sword upright. He wears a black robe tucked into green pants patterned with dragonflies over a suit of armor, a cloth bundle tied over his back. A tie-dyed band with red circular motifs runs across the top. From left, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon XIII and Nakamura Shikan VI. Nice large figures with fine detail in the hair.
