Series; Legends of Women of All Ages

Sei Shonagon, 1863 - Attractive portrait of the poet Sei Shonagon at the Imperial Palace. The well-known tenth-century poet was invited to the royal court by Empress Teishi, who appreciated her wit and clever observations. She is shown rolling up the fine blinds enclosing the verandah for a view outside. She wears a beautiful robe trimmed with layers of brocade over red pants, her long hair falling over her shoulders and the fabric trailing on the floor behind her. The bottom of the outer kimono features a view of pine trees along the seashore. A charming design, nicely detailed.
