Confronting an Elder, 1898

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych of a samurai angrily confronting an elder, glaring at him as he holds a folding fan decorated with a red sun. The older man scowls back at him, gripping the edges of his kimono. The beauty standing behind him watches with a slight smile, her hand resting atop the hilt of a sword. The angry warrior wears a tan kamishimo patterned with fierce dragons and swirling clouds over a black kimono with a beautiful burnished geometric design. The warrior Yoshitsune stands at right, watching soberly, with a matron leaning forward anxiously below him. The actors in the left panel are Onoe Eizaburo and Onoe Kikugoro, and those in the right panel are Nakamura Fukusuke as Yoshitsune and Bando Shucho as Sakami. A colorful design with large expressive figures, nicely detailed with delicate embossing on the white kimono collars and the elder's white hair.
