Series; Seven Brilliant Stars, 1876

Metal at Bain (Umajirushi): Ichikawa Danjuro as Shibata Katsuie - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro as Shibata Katsuie, biting his lower lip as he grimaces with rage. His hair sticks out in tufts atop the sides of his head, the longer locks pulled back into a topknot, giving him a somewhat disheveled appearance along with his bushy beard. His green kimono features a pattern of yellow blossoms and scrolls, worn over a white under robe. A bold red background sets off the figure, while an image of a gohei, a wand with folded strips of paper used in Shinto purification rituals, creates a dramatic backdrop against a deep blue sky. A great design from this rarely seen Yoshitoshi series.
