Hiroshige's Figure Tokaido - In 1832 Hiroshige traveled with an entourage of the shogun's officials from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto along the Tokaido road. His journey led him to produce many different series based on this often traveled and famous route. This wonderful edition called the Figure or Jinbutsu Tokaido, designed around 1852, features large format figures set against the natural beauty of the landscape. It's an intriguing series, since Hiroshige's other Tokaido groups focus primarily on nature, rather than on man. These handsome designs offer a different perspective of life along the Tokaido, with beauties and samurai encountering farmers, peasants, and vendors along the road. A great opportunity to add a Hiroshige Tokaido print to your collection.
