Ichikawa Sadanji I as Goro Tokimune, 1893

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Sadanji I as Goro Tokimune, one of the famous Soga brothers, during their night attack on Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The samurai snuck into the camp to kill the nobleman Suketsune, who murdered their father when the brothers were young boys. Here, Goro grimaces with rage, biting his lower right as he draws back his sword. Rain falls straight down through the night sky, Goro's wet hair clinging to his face and streaming over his shoulders. He wears a blue robe patterned with his trademark butterflies over a white robe and suit of armor. A gold design with fantastic detail in the hair. Includes embossing on the white hilt of the sword at right and burnishing on the armor.
