Nakamura Fukusuke IV as Shosaku, 1887

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke IV as the samurai Shosaku in a play about the cat monster of Okazaki. An old witch haunted the temple near Okazaki along the Tokaido Road, assuming the form of an enormous cat waiting to attack young women who came to visit the temple. Here, Shosaku peers through the window of the old temple, looking suspiciously over his shoulder as he pushes up one sleeve of his kimono. Tattered blinds hang overhead, and a lamp can be seen at left. An interesting design with an expressive figure, detailed with burnishing on the black kimono.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 1/4" + margins as shown
