Iwai Hanshiro VII as the Servant Ohatsu, 1855

Series; Young and Steady Characters from the Past and the Present

Iwai Hanshiro VII as the Servant Ohatsu, 1855 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Iwai Hanshiro VII as the Ohatsu, the faithful maid of the junior lady-in-waiting Onoe. After the jealous senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji replaced a valuable statue in Onoe's care with a sandal, the humiliated Onoe committed suicide. Here, Ohatsu is on her way to deliver a letter for her mistress in a lacquer box tucked under her arm. She grins happily as she looks up, unaware that the box contain's Onoe's suicide note and the sandal. A border of clouds separates the figure from oversize iris blossoms against a night sky, with a circular inset of Onoe above. An attractive design from a rarely seen series, detailed with embossing on the white kimono collar.
