The Syllable Shi (Ji) for Jiraiya: Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Jiraiya Ogata Hiroyuki by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Syllable Shi (Ji) for Jiraiya: Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Jiraiya Ogata Hiroyuki

Series; The Seven Variations of the Iroha, 1856

The Seven Variations of the Iroha - Handsome design from Toyokuni III's 1856 series pairing kabuki scenes with the kana syllabary in iroha order. These lively images feature expressive figures in handsomely detailed settings. Attractively colored, many include deluxe printing techniques such as bokashi shading or embossing. The red title cartouche at upper right appears to emerge from a demon's mouth, with a text panel next to it in the form of a folding screen. Also in 1856, Toyokuni III completed a supplement series in a very similar format using numbers instead of syllables. A great example of Toyokuni III's fine kabuki prints.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 8 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Stitching holes at side, wormhole, repaired. Slight creasing at edges. Please see photos for details.
