Kumagai and Atsumori, 1879

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from a play about the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani between the forces of the Minamoto and the Taira. At left, the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane rides a black horse as he captures the young samurai Taira no Atsumori. The agitated veteran grimaces angrily as he waves his fan above his head. In the center, Atsumori looks up at him with a suspicious frown, his long hair falling loosely over his shoulders. He wears a vest patterned with the butterfly crest of the Taira clan over a blue brocade kimono and armor, a fan in hand. At right, a beauty leans forward, throwing one hand out in alarm as she eyes Naozane. A bold composition with large figures, beautifully detailed with an embossed pattern on the white vest.
