Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ceremony of the Proclaiming of the Constitution, 1889

Comments - Handsome scene of the Meiji Emperor and Empress on their way to the ceremony of the proclaiming of the new Japanese constitution. They ride in a royal carriage topped with a golden yellow phoenix figurine. The coachman sits atop a bench covered with a red cloth trimmed with fringe, driving a team of six white horses. Two soldiers on horseback follow behind carrying pennants. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black areas of the carriages and black uniforms, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the pattern on the red areas of the carriage. An interesting design.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with nice color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small tears and holes, repaired. A few creases and marks. Please see photos for details.
