Famous Places in Tokyo: Horse-drawn Streetcar at Kyobashi Road, 1877

Comments - Great image of a horse-drawn street car making its way along Kyobashi Road in Tokyo. Passengers peer out the windows and a conductor stand in the front with a riding crop. At lower left, a rickshaw passes in the opposite direction. A modern brick building with glass windows can be seen in the center, with a ladder leaning up against its side, while the towers of the castle rise above the trees in the distance at upper left. A fine depiction of the rapid modernization taking place in Japan during the Meiji era.
