Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon Meeting in the Yoshiwara - Fantastic illustration from a popular kabuki play showing the two arch enemies Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon encountering each other in the Yoshiwara at night when their scabbards accidentally brush. Entrusted by his lord with the care of a precious scroll, Sanza was banished from his clan after the scroll was stolen by the evil Banzaemon, who appears at right dressed in a black robe with a bold design of swirling clouds and red lightning bolts. He leans forward aggressively, throwing one hand out at his side. At left, Sanza grips his sword, preparing to draw his weapon as he grimaces with rage, watching Banzaemon out of the corners of his eyes. The disgraced samurai wears a blue kimono patterned with swallows in flight and driving raindrops. In the center, a commoner stands between the pair, frowning angrily as he tucks up the back of his robe, a young boy behind him carrying a lantern. The upper stories of the teahouses behind them extend into the distance, with a blossoming cherry tree against the deep blue sky. Ichikawa Danjuro appears at Banzaemon. Nice large expressive figures in an attractive setting.
