Applying Makeup to Asahina, 1858

Comments - Interesting scene of a beauty applying makeup to the strongman Asahina, who is a friend of the famous Soga Brothers. He sits on a small stool, one arm extended as the woman taps a large brush against the palm of her hand. A narrow brush is caught between her teeth, and a lacquer tray on the floor nearby holds a container of makeup and a bowl of water. Asahina is easily recognizable by his unusual "monkey makeup" and flared sideburns, and his magnificent kimono patterned with cranes with outstretched wings. A lamp is pulled close to provide light, and a rust colored curtain with a large white crest on it fills the background. An intriguing subject, beautifully detailed.
