Original Hiromitsu Nakazawa (1874 - 1964) Japanese Woodblock Print
Takasegawa, 1911

Series; Scenes of the Inner Provinces: Kyoto, Volume 1, 1911

Scenes of the Inner Provinces - Sketch tour books depicting travelers and scenic views became popular in Japan in the early 20th-century, and Hiromitsu Nakazawa was one of the most well-known artists to work in the genre. A Western-style painter and illustrator, Nakazawa's first sketch tour woodblocks were published in 1905, followed by contributions to multiple volume series by various artists between 1906 and 1912. The 1911 - 1912 series "Scenes of the Inner Provinces" was released in three volumes dedicated to Kyoto, Yamato, and Osaka. His designs are rendered in a painterly style, with soft muted colors contrasting with lively calligraphic line work. These attractive designs capture the immediacy and freshness of a sketch, and are a nice example of Nakazawa's work in the shin-hanga sketch tour genre.
