The Battle of Kawanakajima, 4th Year, 9th Month of the Eiroku Era, 1854

Comments - Fantastic samurai triptych of Yamamoto Kansuke rallying his exhausted troops for their last stand at the Battle of Kawanakajima in October 1561. His bloodied and battered men stagger to the top of a hillside, the general on horseback urging them on as blood runs from his head wounds. In the center, two men carry water in helmets to the exhausted and bleeding samurai at left, who hold out their hands pleadingly. In the center, the face of a warrior gripping a spear has begun to turn a bluish gray, a sign of his impending death, and many of the men have blue lips, another clue to their imminent demise. The battle continues to rage behind them, silhouetted in gray on the opposite shore. An incredible, dramatic image from this historic battle, with excellent detail and rich, atmospheric color. A terrific samurai subject.
