Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
An Account of Yoshitsune, 1844

Comments - Bold image of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, his wife Kita-no-kata (Kyo-no-kimi), and the loyal warrior monk Benkei on Mt. Yoshino in 1186. The couple prepares to say goodbye, as Yoshitsune must flee to avoid the wrath of his older brother, Yoritomo. They are dressed as yamabushi or mountain monks, wearing sashes decorated with white pompoms over robes and armor. At left, the beauty lifts her hat above her head, smiling as she scans the horizon. In the center, Yoshitsune grimaces angrily, gripping his fan with both hands. Benkei stands at right with a walking staff tucked against his shoulder. Pine trees dot the snow-covered mountains in the distance. Nice large expressive figures. The first time we've seen this Kuniyoshi samurai subject.
