Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kaidomaru, Yamauba, and the Woodcutter Yamagatsu, 1859

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the young boy Kaidomaru (also known as Kintaro) performing a dance for his mother, the wild mountain woman Yamauba, and the woodcutter Yamagatsu. The boy hops excitedly on one foot as Yamauba holds a toy noisemaker of a miniature drum, watching him with a dismayed expression. The woodsman sits on a bundle of firewood atop his enormous axe, smoking a pipe and frowning worriedly. Vines with orange leaves wind around the pine tree framing the night sky behind them. Nice expressive figures in an attractive natural setting.
