Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the story "A False Murasaki's Country Genji," a parody of the beloved "Tale of Genji" which recounts the adventures of Mitsuuji, the Country Genji. At right, Sawamura Sojuro III appears as the young nobleman's father, looking over his shoulder with a frown as he stands on the palace verandah. He wears an elegant outer robe with a pleated collar over a yellow kimono with a delicate embossed pattern. Mitsuuji waits in the garden at left, smiling and gesturing with his fan. His kimono is shaded from soft pink to red and bordered with clematis blossoms and Genji symbols, tucked into striped hakama pants. A beauty sits at the top of the steps, her kimono sleeve held shyly to her mouth. At upper right, an attendant carries in a lacquer box covered with a gray cloth. A beautiful triptych with attractive color and lovely detail in the sumptuous fabrics and setting. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
