Comments - Attractive design of the young Prince Genji in an interior, having just washed his hands in the basin of water at his feet. His kimono sleeves are pushed back and he holds his wet hands out expectantly, as the beauty at right offers him a towel, smiling shyly and coyly turning her head away as she plays with a hairpin. An attendant at left holds an ornately decorated pitcher. Tatami mats cover the floor and a fine lacquer towel stand sits at right. The nobleman's kimono is patterned with Genji symbols, which also form a decorative border along the verandah outside. A charming design from this timeless tale, nicely detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
