Meiji Empress and Awabe Divers - Terrific triptych showing the Meiji Empress and the ladies of the court visiting awabe divers at the seashore. The Empress sits under a canopy at right, holding a large folding fan. The divers swim through the water at left, one gripping a knife between her teeth, as others emerge from the waves holding abalone shells. A woman stands on the rocky shore wringing the water from her red wrap, while at far right, a beauty nurses her small child, looking down with a loving expression. A charming design with lively color and wonderful detail.
