The First Time on a Boat in a Miniature Lake, 1847 - 1848

Comments - Lovely scene of a young boy's first outing by boat on a miniature lake in a garden. The young nobleman leans over the edge of the boat, watching with delight as the koi fish eat the rice cakes he has tossed over the side. He is accompanied by several ladies-in-waiting, two of whom propel the craft with bamboo poles. One woman sits behind him, smiling fondly, dressed in a black kimono patterned with pine sprigs. Another beauty holds his sword upright, wrapped in cloth, next to an elegant lacquer bento box containing a picnic. A charming scene, beautifully detailed with an attractive natural setting.
