Hahakigi, Chapter 2

Series; Lady Murasaki's Genji Cards, 1857

Lady Murasaki's Genji Cards - Lovely design from a series by Kunisada II depicting scenes from the classic Japanese novel "The Tale of Genji." Each print illustrates a chapter in Murasaki's beloved drama about the life of Prince Genji, a nobleman of the Minamoto clan during the Heian era. Beautifully drawn figures are set into wonderfully detailed environments with a decorative confetti-like border. The clam shell cartouche in the upper corner identifies the chapter and scene. These illustrations offer exotic views into courtly life in Japan during the time of Genji. Many feature deluxe printing techniques such as delicate embossing, burnishing, or soft bokashi shading. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this series in its collection. A great choice to collect or display.
