Entering Moronao's Mansion

Series; Biographies of the Loyal Retainers, 1893

Biographies of the Loyal Retainers - Handsome design from Toshihide's 1893 series "Biographies of the Loyal Retainers" illustrating the famous night attack of the 47 ronin on Lord Moronao's palace. The scenes show the samurai both inside and outside the mansion, sometimes in quiet poses, waiting to strike, or in the midst of action. An inset across the top in the form of an open scroll features a smaller image of the ronin along with text. Toshihide was a student of Yoshitoshi, and his drawing style is similar with realistic, expressive figures. Some designs include touches of burnishing or embossing. An interesting Meiji era series depicting these timeless heroes.
