Comments - Attractive kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Kiichi Hogen," a drama about the retired warrior Kiichi Hogen and the disposition of his books of military strategy. Kiichi fought for the Heike, but his family had alliances to the Genji, so members of both clans were are interested in obtaining his secrets. The young Ushiwakamaru (the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune) of the Genji clan, joined his household disguised as the servant Torazo to obtain the books. Kiichi's daughter, Princess Minazuru, has fallen in love with him, and she smiles shyly behind her sleeve as she kneels at his feet. Ushiwakamaru frowns unhappily, one of the secret scrolls in his hand. He wears a black and white kamishimo patterned with paulownia, the symbol of the Genji, his long pants trailing beneath his feet. Wisteria blossoms hang overhead. A charming design
