Urazato and Tokijiro: That Licensed Quarter Dream of a Night Crow, 1860

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of the lovers Tokijiro and the courtesan Urazato making their way through the street during a fire at night. The beauty smiles fondly up at her sweetheart as they holds hands, Tokijiro grimacing as he watches the embers flying across the sky. He has a quilted fireman's jacket depicting a wolf draped over her shoulders. Figures in dark silhouette can be seen rushing through the darkness to safety in the background. A terrific, bold image with large figures, intricate detailing in the quilting, and a spattering of hand-applied pigment to simulate embers. A great design.
