Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play "Sumidagawa Tsui no Kaga-mon" of Jinriki Tamigoro attacking Owasa, the wife of Yamada Saburo, as he attempts to steal her money bag. Kneeling on the ground, the beauty keeps hold of the drawstrings on the purse as Tamigoro raises his sword high, a distraught grimace on his face. The beauty wears a black kimono bordered with blue and gray blossoms over a red under robe with butterflies trimmed with a gray floral pattern. At left, a man in a boldly pattern gray coat lifts a lantern high, trying to see what is happening. The theft takes along the shore, a blossoming cherry tree and pines framing the night sky above the undulating water. The actors include Onoe Kikujiro II as Owasa and Arashi Kichisaburo III as Tamigoro. Great expressive figures.
