Lingering Snow at Tsurugaoka, 1868 - Fantastic scene of the assassination of the Shogun Sanetomo at Tsurugaoka Shrine by his nephew, Kugyo (Minamoto no Yoshinari). According to accounts, Sanetome had been at the shrine for a ceremony on February 12, 1219 and was just about to descend the stairs when Kugyo attacked him with his sword, decapitating him and pronouncing himself shogun. Here the young warrior steps boldly upon the platform, a monk's cowl wrapped about his head, calmly drawing back his weapon. The astonished shogun loses his footing as he flails at his attacker with his fan, his court cap and shoe flying off as he stumbles backwards. His retainers react with alarm, the men below hurrying to his aid. A dramatic image of this notorious incident, the quiet beauty of the snowy winter scene belying the violence of the subject. Beautifully detailed with a burnished pattern on the shogun's black robe. A terrific subject from this rarely seen early Yoshitoshi series.
