Series; Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital

Famous Restaurants of the Eastern Capital - Handsome print from a collaborative series by Toyokuni III and Hiroshige, published between 1852 and 1853. Toyokuni III created the large actor portraits in the foreground, with Hiroshige designing the smaller landscape and still-life insets relating to the featured restaurant or its location. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has many of these images in its collection. These attractive designs are beautifully colored and detailed, making them a great choice for a collector interested in Edo era woodblocks.

Tomoeya Restaurant, 1852 - Great design of Bando Shuka I as the famous woman warrior Tomoe Gozen in the play "Hirakana Seisuiki." She looks back over her shoulder with a sly grin, her long hair flowing back over her shoulders. She wears a softly shaded kimono patterned with circular motifs over a red under robe and armor, clenching a blue cloth in her hand. The inset at upper left shows the back gate of the Kameido Tenmangu Shrine with visitors strolling about the grounds, while the still-life at right features small wooden bullfinches exchanged at the shrines as part of a festival each January, along with a spring of plum blossoms. Beautifully detailed with fine line work in the hair and embossing on the white collar and blue cloth.
