Struggling Beauty, 1861

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of Orie, the daughter of Yozaemon, struggling to free herself from the grip of a man beneath the mosquito netting. Though she smiles, the beauty pushes his chin away with one hand as she emerges into the room, where the samurai Yazama Shigetaro sits at right, watching with a frown, a pot hanging over the flames in the floor brazier behind him. At left, the samurai Sato Yomoshichi eavesdrops outside. The home is rather shabby, with tears in the shoji widows and cracks and missing plaster in the walls. From left, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon, Asao Yoroku, Sawamura Tanosuke, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro. Nice expressive figures with wonderful detail in the setting.
