The Peony Lantern, No. 27 - Terrific Yoshitoshi design from the famous ghost story "The Peony Lantern." The beauty Tsuyu fell in love with the handsome young Shinzaburo, and after she and her maidservant died suddenly, they visited the samurai each night as ghosts. He was however, unaware that they were spirits, and the story ends tragically after he becomes romantically involved with the ghost of his former love. Dressed in pale robes, the elegant beauty floats along, her servant Yone carrying the peony lantern at the end of a slender pole. Tsuyu's white under robe is delicately embossed with an allover pattern. A fantastic image from this timeless tale, drawn with beautiful flowing line work.
