Series; Tales of the Floating World on Eastern Brocade, 1867 - 1868

Tales of the Floating World on Eastern Brocade - Dating from 1867 - 1868, this terrific early series by Yoshitoshi illustrates famous tales by a variety of storytellers. The stories are retold by Kanagaki Robun in text blocks that take the form of a book with the pages bent back. Yoshitoshi depicts the violence and drama of these popular narratives with wonderful realism and his characteristic attention to detail. Images from this early series are rarely seen on the market and are great choice for a Yoshitoshi enthusiast or a collector interested in Japanese folklore and legends.

The Monk Dentatsu, 1868 - Dramatic scene of the priest Dentetsu on a bridge, watching an enormous explosion in the village below. He lunges forward in surprise, throwing his hand out before him as he stares intently at the flames and smoke radiating skyward from the detonation. He wears a blue priest's robe over a grey kimono and white leggings, gripping a club, his hair starting to grow out instead of being shaved as is common for a Buddhist priest. A dynamic composition, with the diagonal curve of the bridge and the fluttering blue robes adding a sense of energy. Nicely detailed with bokashi shading in the sky and faint embossing on the text panel that takes the form of a book.
