Beauty Practicing Martial Arts

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a beauty practicing martial arts, wielding a wooden sword in each hand. She wears a black kimono patterned with a flowing river and blossoms, the sleeves tied back with a red sash. At right, A Chinese princess holds up a fan as she recoils, leaning back on one hand. She wears a colorful robe trimmed with layers of ruffles and an ornate headdress with a golden phoenix and strings of beads. At lower left, a young girl watches the pair while above her, another girl looks over her shoulder with her hands thrown out before her. The room is elegantly decorated with panels featuring birds and cherry branches, with a blue print curtain in the doorway and a lamp trimmed with tassels at upper right. From left, the actors are Bando Kichiya, Sanogawa Ichimatsu, Ichimura Kakitsu, and Onoe Kikujiro. A handsome design, nicely detailed.
