Mouth of the Naka River

Series; Famous Places in the Environs of Edo (Edo kinko meisho)

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Mouth of the Naka River - Hiroshige's "Famous Places in the Environs of Edo." These designs are in the unusual "ebangire" format, a long horizontal sheet printed with landscape or nature scenes in light colors. During the Edo era, members of the upper class used these prints as writing paper for short greetings or poems (similar to surimono), so very few original prints in this format survive. The highly respected Adachi Publisher has recreated all known designs from the series with a wonderful attention to detail, each print with the Adachi ink seal on the reverse. These expansive landscape views features delicate bokashi shading and incredibly fine line work, beautifully capturing the soft colors and airy mood of the original prints. A terrific choice for display, they also would make wonderful additions to a Hiroshige collection. Adachi released this edition in very small numbers and they are rarely seen. If these lovely Hiroshige landscapes appeal to you, bid now!
