Original Shiho Sakakibara (1887 - 1971) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sparrow and Chestnut

Shiho Sakakibara - Born in Kyoto in 1887, Shiho Sakakibara studied traditional Japanese painting at the Kyoto City School of Art and Craft and the Kyoto City Technical College of Painting. He is best known for his beautiful paintings of birds and flowers based on the style of the Maruyama-Shijo school, with many woodblocks made from his original designs. These lyrical images combine careful observation from nature with soft washes of color and a fine sense of asymmetrical balance. The subtle colors and gradations of tone are exquisitely rendered, creating richly elegant compositions. These prints come from a limited edition series published in 1960 from blocks masterfully carved by Akiho Kagetsusen, with an embossed seal and circular crest in the lower right margin. These large format prints would make wonderful framed displays, adding a lovely touch of nature to any space.
