Comments - Fantastic Yoshitoshi triptych depicting Minamoto no Yoshitsune parting from his lover, the famous shirabyoshi dancer Shizuka Gozen, at Mount Yoshino as he goes off to war. Yoshitsune stands at left, his eyes tightly closed as he lifts his head skyward, holding a cloth-wrapped parcel in his hand. Lady Shizuka falls to the ground behind him, covering her head with her kimono as she weeps, clutching the hand drum that Yoshitsune has given her as a gift to remember him by. Another retainer crouches in the snow behind her, watching the painful separation. Snow falls lightly over the spectacular mountain setting, with a waterfall rushing over a cliff at right. A stunning scene with fantastic color and detail in the armor, contrasting beautifully with the softly shaded snow and wintry gray sky. Nicely detailed with burnishing in the armor and court caps, and silver mica on the beauty's kimono. Includes a spattering of hand-applied gofun (white pigment) to simulate falling snow. A great subject.
