Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play "Mitsumono Tsuzure no Nishiki" of the samurai Harufuji Jiroemon thrusting a sword at his enemy, Kamura Utaemon. Jiroemon has been disguised as a beggar while seeking to avenge the murder of his father. Here, he grimaces angrily as he grips his weapon with both hands, having drawn it from its hiding place inside a bamboo pole. Utaemon frowns worriedly as he slowly draws his own sword. From left, the actors are Arashi Kanjuro I and Bando Mitsugoro III. Nice expressive figures in an interesting roadside setting.
