Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Somewaka Tazuna." At left, the packhorse driver Hachizo has fallen to one knee in the snow, frowning worriedly as he holds the cord of a drawstring purse. His plaid kimono is pushed down to the waist, revealing a blue tie-dyed shirt that matches his leggings. At right, another packhorse driver clenches the bag between his teeth to free his hand to draw his sword, ready to attack Hachizo. The scene takes place inside a courtyard, with a gate in the fence behind them and snow blanketing the blossoming plum branches overhead. The actor on the left is Kataoka Nizaemon VIII. Nice expressive figures.
