Comments - Interesting portrait of lead character from the Noh play "Shojo," a tale about a mysterious man who buys liquor from the stall of the young man Kofu and drinks it, but never becomes drunk. When asked his name, he says that he is Shojo, a spirit who lives in the sea. One day Kofu meets Shojo, who is drunk and dances delightedly about, leaving him a jar full of alcohol that never empties. Kofu wakes up and realizes that it has been a dream, but the magic jar is still there, ensuring his family's prosperity for many years. Here, Shojo waves a fan as he dances, hopping on one leg, his shaggy red wig falling over his shoulders. The background features shimmering mica. Yamaguchi Ryoshu trained as both a Noh theater actor and an artist, working in both careers. He was adopted by the famed Yamaguchi family of actors, who specialized in kyogen performances.
