Series: The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido

The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido - In 1959 Sekino began creating own his version of this famous series. He completed it in 1974, and the next year received the Ministry of Education Award for his outstanding achievement "in using every possible technique in woodblock printing, Japanese traditional art, and the recreation of the old fifty-three stations on the Tokaido highway in present-day light." His interpretations are modern, using creative perspectives and the bold style and colors for which he is so well-known. It is truly a landmark series and is Sekino's masterwork.

Junichiro Sekino, 20th Century Master - Junichiro Sekino was one of the leading artists of the twentieth century sosaku hanga, or creative prints, movement in Japan, in which artists themselves were involved in every aspect of printmaking. Sekino designed, carved, and printed his images himself, gaining an international reputation for his amazing range of subjects and techniques. A true 20th century master, Sekino's works are included in major museum collections around the world. His woodblocks are highly collectible and sought after by modern print collectors.

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse near top corners from previous mounting. Slight toning, a couple wrinkles at edge and small spots, slight rippling from printing process, a couple fibers in paper in margins. Please note, due to the size, this print may be shipped rolled.
