Warrior Riding through the Waves, 1857

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of an elderly samurai waving his fan frantically at the warrior Sasaki Saburo riding his horse through the waves. The young man raises his riding crop high above his head as the animal plunges through the deep water. At left, a nobleman watches from the shore, wearing a vest over a kimono tucked into print hakama pants, a kneeling beauty at his side holding a poem slip. The nobleman is played by Nakamura Fukusuke I and Ichikawa Ichizo III appears as Sasaki Saburo. A handsome design with fine bokashi shading in the water and faint embossing in the elderly samurai's white hair.
