Puzzled Man outside a Beauty's House, 1860 - Terrific kabuki triptych showing a rather puzzled-looking man standing outside a beauty's home. He scratches his head as he looks sheepishly over his shoulder into the courtyard, where a woman kneels in the snow and a young girl carries a little boy on his back. Inside, a beautiful courtesan smiles happily as she places a heavy robe over the shoulders of a beauty resting in bed. The folding screen behind them features a lovely scene of a pagoda spire and pine trees in silhouette. Interestingly, the musicians and chanters for the play are shown seated in the verandah at left, with snow-covered plum branches behind them. An intriguing scene with a wonderfully detailed setting.
