Series; Eight Outstanding People Matched with the Plum Calendar, 1859
Commoner in a Battledore and Ball Kimono, 1859 - Terrific kabuki portrait of a commoner wearing a beautiful kimono patterned with decorative paddles and shuttlecocks for a game similar to badminton and colorful balls. He looks ahead with a stern expression, a blue and white towel wrapped snuggly about his neck. The title cartouche takes the form of books filled with text. Detailed with fine line work on the kimono, embossing on the battledore, towel, and red under robe, burnishing on the black collar, and a dusting of mica on the sky. A handsome design.
