Nakamura Shikan as Anewa Heiji, 1886

Comments - Dramatic kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan as the Genji warrior Anewa Heiji, recoiling with an angry expression as he thrusts out one arm, a fan in his other hand. He wears a brown vest lined in light blue over a green and yellow print kimono and armor, his hair pulled back into an upright topknot tied with white cord. Blue curtains run across the top of the scene with a large folding fan at upper left. An expressive figure, nicely set off by the deep red background, detailed with metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the fan in Heiji's hand.
