Scene from Yayoi-zakura Hisago no Makubari, 1860

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Yayoi-zakura Hisago no Makubari." At right, the courtesan Nanaura seems dismayed by the arrival of Fukumasuya Daisuke at left, her mouth slightly agape as she stares at him over her shoulder. She wears a striking outer robe with a dragon against a black sky above crashing waves. The visitor frowns back at her, waving a folding fan with writing on it. In the center, the nobleman Hayakawa Takakage grins slyly at Daisuke. He grips an ornately detailed pipe, an elegant tobacco set resting on the floor before him. A low garden fence fills the background, with lanterns burning at intervals and blossoming cherry trees overhead. From left, the actors are Kataoka Nizaemon VIII, Nakamura Fukusuke I, and Onoe Kikugoro IV. A nicely detailed subject.
