Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Kosode Soga Azami no Ironui." The courtesan Izayoi has an affair with a young priest named Seishin, causing him to be banished. When they attempt to commit lover's suicide by drowning, neither succeeds and they go their separate ways, and Seishin eventually becomes a murderous bandit. The pair reunites when Seishin kidnaps the beauty before realizing her true identity. Here, Iyazoi stands along an embankment outside a daimyo's palace, smiling as she looks over her shoulder. At right, Seishin watches her with a distraught expression, gripping an umbrella with both hands as he contemplates their future. The actor at left is Iwai Kumesaburo III. Nice expressive figures in an interesting, well-detailed setting.
