Comments - Great kabuki double portrait featuring from left, Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Kirino Toshiaki and Onoe Kikugoro V as the samurai Saigo Kohei. Kohei leans forward, holding out a fan in his hand as he stares angrily at his companion. Toshiaki returns his gaze with a sober expression, wearing a brown vest with a rooster on the shoulders over a fine suit of armor with a paulownia leaf on the chest plate. The figures are surrounded by text, and bordered by a background of splashing waves and a red sky. An intriguing image, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and vibrant color.
