Nakamura Shikan III as Akisaku and Sawamura Tanosuke IV as Shiranui, 1864

Comments - Great kabuki double portrait featuring Nakamura Shikan III as the beauty Akisaku and Sawamura Tanosuke IV as the samurai Shiranui. Akisaku tilts her head with a sly grin as she watches her companion out of the corners of her eyes. The young man lifts his hat for a closer look at the beauty, smiling slightly. His blue kimono is patterned with colorful leaves. At upper left, a swallow flies across the sky, willow branches framing a view of houses along the shore beyond. Nice large expressive figures. An early Kunichika kabuki design.

Image Size - 14" x 19" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels. Stitching holes at one side of each panel, a few small holes, repaired. Soiling on face. Please see photos for details
