Festival at Ueno Park during President Grant's Visit, circa 1879

Comments - Fantastic scene of a festival held at Ueno Park during the visit to Japan in 1879 of U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia. After leaving office in 1877, President Grant embarked on a world tour that started in Liverpool and brought him at last to Japan, before returning to the United Sates. This image shows a spectacular festival held in Ueno Park in honor of Grant's visit and which the Japanese Emperor attended. The Meiji Emperor, Empress, Grant, and his wife watch the procession from a box at upper right. Soldiers stand at attention at lower right as large floats topped with figures move along a pathway lined with paper lanterns. A terrific and rare record of this famous event, and the first time we've offered this subject.
